Voices of Lalibela

Empowering Communities, Preserving Nature

Lalibela Community Outreach runs a recreation centre in Seven Fountains, providing a safe haven for locals from rural, impoverished backgrounds. Through donations, we support the community with various initiatives and projects.

Vision

To protect and preserve vast wildlife corridors, ensuring a sustainable coexistence between wildlife and local communities.

Mission

Through responsible eco-tourism, we support rural communities, conserve natural habitats, and protect wildlife. Our initiatives educate and empower communities to become stewards of the land while benefiting from conservation efforts. All tourism profits are reinvested, and donor funds directly support projects focused on development, wellbeing, and conservation.

Foundation Impact Pillars

Education and Youth

Empowerment and Development

01 / Sport DEVELOPMENT

Exercise and movement are essential for overall well-being, promoting both physical health and personal growth. At our recreation centre, children stay active and engaged through football, netball, karate, traditional dance, and a vibrant gumboot troupe, each fostering teamwork, discipline, and cultural expression.

We are delighted to expand our support with the introduction of a community junior and senior cricket team and look forward to their development. As part of our commitment to youth development, the Foundation provides essential resources, including transport to matches and events, sports equipment, uniforms, and access to training facilities across all sporting disciplines. Through these initiatives, we aim to inspire confidence, teamwork, and a lifelong love of movement in the next generation.

02 / Nutrition

Agriculture

In collaboration with Rhodes University, the Department of Agriculture hosts regular workshops on small-scale and backyard gardening. Produce is sold at a monthly market in Grahamstown. The Foundation supports these growers with seeds, seedlings, and the business skills needed to manage their own small enterprises.

Soup Kitchens and Food Parcels

The Foundation funds daily soup kitchens, ensuring every community member receives at least one nutritious meal a day. We also supply the local primary school with breakfast porridge and provide afternoon meals at the recreation centre, supporting improved attendance and academic performance.

During school holidays, children receive up to three meals per day.

03 / Healthcare

Most of the healthcare facilities our community members have access to, are poorly resourced and under staffed. It is our intention to support our community with better healthcare options, especially should the need arise for speciality care for which they have little to no means.

04 / Ongoing Projects

Dogs, cats, donkeys and cows are looked after with the assistance of Ikhala Veterinary  Services. With their support, we keep as many animals as possible sterilised, dewormed and tick and flea free.  Kennels are gifted to individuals who look after their pets. These kennels are made from old pallets and decking planks once used in the lodges and no longer in use due to refurbishments. The Foundation provides food once a week for dogs and cats.
